On Saturday November 9th, Canada experienced its first ever Dance Marathon, hosted by Catholic Central High School in London, Ontario. Our London Champion, Eli, wouldn't miss the opportunity to come out and show off his amazing dance moves, and he sure came out blazing in front of over 100 students! The students were able to hear Eli's story from his parents and even dedicated their "morale dance" of that hour to the Khan family to celebrate their journey at Children's in London. Over $18,000 was raised at the first annual Crusaderthon!

Dance Marathon is a movement of hundreds of high schools and post-secondary schools all raising money For The Kids in their local communities, by joining together for a length of time and dancing to make a difference. CCHS was the first school in Canada to host this inspiring event, with our next event taking place at Simon Fraser University in February 2014. To find out more and how your school can get involved, contact Stephanie Blight at [email protected].

When chatting with Ryan, some of his favourite memories of the Champion Child program, presented by Walmart, was meeting new friends, trick and treating at Walmart Canada headquarters with the now named “King of Manitoba” and receiving his medal from the great folks at Walmart Canada. From the instant they met, CHEO’s Champion Child, presented by Walmart, Tyler and Ryan became instant friends. Not only are they both 16 years of age, but they have so much in common.

They hope to be able to visit each other’s cities soon.

It has only been the first leg of this amazing opportunity that my Miracle Champ has been offered and I am in awe at the magnitude of the gathering, humbled by the courage of our children and hopeful when I speak with parents and children who have overcome or going through life altering illnesses.  I have met parents who like myself are worn by the ins and outs of caring for a child who is ill but like myself grateful that our children have been touched by the expertise of medical staff at our Miracle Network hospitals.  The conference is as much for parents and siblings as it is for our Miracle Champ as we are learning and building our strength from each other.  I am anticipating what the upcoming days will bring as we continue to meet with families from across North America.

What a great day we had today!  Our Champions have told me that trick or treating with my friends at Walmart's Home Office was a great way to start their day!!!  We then got to head to the super fancy Canoe on the 54th floor of the TD Tower for some the best food EVER - Asaiah convinced me to try my first cake pop, and I recommend that to everyone :). We got to watch Nikki Yanofsky perform her Olympic song at the ROM - some of the Champions got up to dance, and Asaiah told me that MAYBE he'd dance with me in the Magic Kingdom ;).

Six year old, Eli Khan of West Lorne, Ontario has gone from miracle child to Champion Child with the help of Walmart.  Children’s Health Foundation and the Children’s Miracle Network Champions program, which is presented by Walmart, have selected Eli as the 2013-2014 Champion Child.

Previous Champion, Dawson Malolepszy, joined Walmart staff along with Eli’s friends and family and Children’s Hospital representatives to officially welcome Eli into his new role. The special celebration at the Hyde Park Walmart included the premier of Eli’s Champion Child video and a surprise shopping spree.

Eli will represent Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre through Children’s Miracle Network initiatives both locally and across North America.

On September 10th, Ryan Veldkamp became the 2013-2014 Champion Child, presented by Walmart at the Walmart Leila/McPhillips Location. It was a great day as associates, vendors, family, friends and media joined Ryan, Walmart and the Children’s Hospital Foundation as they welcomed him to his new Walmart family. Eric Payne, District Manager presented Ryan with a $1,000 gift card so that Ryan, his Mom Carla, Dad Albert and brother Wesley could go on a shopping spree. Congratulations Ryan!

Our BC Champion Child, Grace Teboekhorst, and her family are getting ready to leave on their Champions Across Canada trip tomorrow morning, and I couldn't be more excited for them!  To get them ready for their big trip, Walmart Canada gave the family an amazing shopping spree at their local Walmart in Port Coquitlam last week.  Read more by clicking here
